For over 60 years, Kiwi Onion Dip has been a staple in New Zealand's culinary scene, but few have known the true origins of this iconic dip.
Over the years, variations of the dip have emerged, with some adding Worcestershire sauce or lemon juice to the mix.
It's a must-have at any party or barbecue and is often served with chips, crackers, or raw vegetables.
The dip has become a beloved icon in New Zealand's culinary culture and has even inspired a popular meme that humorously portrays Kiwis' obsession with the dip.
Kiwi Onion Dip is now a household name, recently, 91-year-old Rosemary Dempsey sat down with Today FM to share the story of how she came up with the beloved Kiwi dip in the late 1950s.
Almost seven decades ago, Rosemary was working at Nestle, in charge of their test kitchen.
"Part of my role was to prepare recipes, invent recipes, for their products so they would sell more," she said.
"I can never believe it," Rosemary said when asked what it's like to be the brains behind a Kiwi icon. "It doesn't really register with me."
"It was a job and I did it well and I think that was probably more important. It never, never ,ceases to amaze me."
