Madonna has adopted twin Malawian girls

Madonna has been given the green light to adopt four-year-old twin girls from Malawi.

The singer, who previously denied she was visiting the African county to expand her family, was given permission by the Malawian High Court to adopt Stella and Esther from a Mchinji orphanage, Home of Hope. Madonna has a long history with Malawi, founding children's charity Raising Malawi in 2006.

The same year, she adopted her son David Banda and daughter Mercy James in 2009.

The twin girls Esther and Stella will join David Banda and Mercy James, Rocco, from Madonna's marriage to Guy Ritchie, and 20-year-old Lourdes, with ex-Carlos Leon.

The adoption bid comes after her ex-husband Guy Ritchie won a nine-month custody battle over their teenage son Rocco in September 2016.

The adoption is conditional on Madonna proving she will provide a suitable home for the girls. A Malawi government-appointed official will reportedly travel to the United States to undertake the assessment.
