Aerobics classes and Jane Fonda's workout videos ruled the exercise world in the 1980s. So, despite the popularity of everything from Crossfit to Zumba in recent years, it appears retro workouts are about to make a major comeback.
Amanda Place, personal trainer and founder of Sculptrition shares five reasons why it's time to pull out the old leotard and sweatbands and get ready to sign up for an '80s-inspired gym session.
Retro workout classes are designed to take you back to a time when fitness was all about having fun.
"The music, the clothes, and the atmosphere are all designed to make you feel like you are back in the '80s or '90s. It's a chance to relive your youth and get fit at the same time," she smiled.
Most retro workout classes are designed to include a variety of different movement styles.
"You'll be doing a combination of cardio and strength training exercises that will help you burn calories and build muscle at the same time. Some of the most popular retro workout classes include step aerobics, jazzercise, and high-impact aerobics," said Amanda.
Great for beginners
If you're new to working out, retro workout classes are a great way to get started.
"They offer a low-impact way to get moving and build up your fitness level. The routines are easy to follow, and the classic hits will keep you motivated throughout the class," the expert noted.
Meet new people
Retro workout classes are a great way to make friends with people who share your interests.
"You'll be working out with people who are just as passionate about fitness as you are. It's a great way to make new friends and build a support system to help you achieve your fitness goals," she continued.
Switch up your workout routine
If you're tired of the same old workout routine, retro-style classes are a great way to liven your routine up.
"You'll be doing exercises that you may not have tried before, and the music and atmosphere will keep you motivated to push yourself harder than you would on your own," added Amanda.
