Kiwi's viral 'one cup tip' explains why you should put a coin on a cup of frozen water

Go grab a cup of water and put it in the freezer!

Posting to the BOP & WAIKATO Weather & Natural Events page, Kaysi F has shared an incredible tip to find out if the frozen food in the freezer is all good to consume after a power outrage or not.

Sharing a photograph of a frozen cup of water with a coin on top of it, they explained the reason why all of us should always have that in a freezer.

"Why you should always put a coin on a frozen cup of water before storms (or start now as you never know when it will be handy!)," Kaysi wrote.

"It's called the one cup tip."

"You put a cup of water in your freezer. Freeze it solid and then put a coin on top of it and leave it in your freezer. That way when you come back after you've been evacuated you can tell if your food went completely bad and just refroze or if it stayed Frozen while you were gone."

So how to identify if the food's okay to eat or if it needs to be thrown away?

"If the coin has fallen to the bottom of the cup that means all the food defrosted and you should throw it out. But if the coin is either on the top or in the middle of the cup then your food may still be ok".

Kaysi recommends leaving a cup of frozen water with the coin in your freezer all the time, just in case you suddenly lose power for any reason.

"It would also be a great idea to leave this in your freezer all the time and if you lose power for any reason you will have this tip to fall back on."

"If you don't feel good about your food, just throw it out. The main thing is for all to be safe."

How come we never thought about this? Genius!
