Even during this time of grief, Prince of Wales virtually attended the annual Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit.
"Although it is the saddest of the circumstances that means I cannot join you in person today, I am pleased to join you in video form," Prince William said.
The Earthshot prize grants huge sums to conversation leaders to encourage sustainability efforts. This award was launched in 2020 by Prince William and Sir David Attenborough, who are also members of the Earthshot Prize Council and help select the winners each year.
Every year the prize is awarded to five winners for their contributions to environmentalism.
"During this time of grief, I take great comfort in your continued enthusiasm, optimism, and commitment to the Earthshot prize and what we are trying to achieve."
The Prince of Wales shares how the Queen would be delighted to know about the event as "protecting the environment was a cause close" to his grandmother's heart.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was also present at the Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit. In fact, she was personally asked by Prince William to attend the event on his behalf as he could not be there in person.
"I'm also humbled to have been asked to speak on behalf of Prince William, who will instead join us virtually today," Prime Minister said.
"I am an exceptionally poor substitute but I also know we all understand the need for His Royal Highness to be with his family at this time."
After her speech, she welcomed Prince William to deliver his message to the awardees and everyone present there.
"It's now my pleasure to end this period of poor subsitution by handing over - and it's my privilege to do so- His Royal Highness Prince William" she said.
"Thank you to Jacinda and Mike for their generous words," Prince William said.
