'Trying to process it': Elton John plays final show of 'magical' Farewell tour

"I don’t think it will sink in for a while yet".

Elton John completed the final concert of his last-ever tour this past weekend and had some lovely words for his fans.

The city of  Stockholm in Sweden had the honour of hosting the 76-year-old musical legend as he wrapped up his ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour’ with a 23-song setlist which featured his greatest hits.

‘Bennie and the Jets’, ‘I’m Still Standing’, and ‘Tiny Dancer’ are just three of the songs John played to the 45,000 in attendance at Tele2 Arena.

Beginning in the USA in 2018, John performed in front of over six million people all over the world during his Farewell tour. In a statement released after his final show, John expressed gratitude to each and every person who came to one of his shows.

“When we set off on my final tour in 2018, I couldn’t have foreseen in my wildest dreams the twists and turns and the highs and lows this tour – and the whole world – would have experienced in the next five years,” the statement reads. “And every step of the way, my fans have been there.”

“They have stuck with me, they have supported me, they have been patient, and they have kept turning out for every single last show. Tonight has been magical. I’m trying to process it, and I don’t think it will sink in for a while yet that I’m finally finished touring.”

“I can’t tell you how much I’m going to miss the fans and how much their support has humbled me – it will stay with me forever.”

During the Sweden show, the band Coldplay appeared via a video message for John in which they thanked him for his unparalleled legacy.

“Elton, from all of us here, from all the bands and artists you’ve helped and inspired, we love you so much,” frontman Chris Martin said. “We are so grateful for everything you’ve done for the AIDS Foundation, anytime you’ve been kind to anybody.”

“For everything you’ve done for LGBTQ. Everything you’ve done for fashion and eyewear. Everything you’ve done for sexiness, and love, and dressing gowns!”

“Everything you’ve done for music, everything Bernie has done for lyrics, everything your band has done over the thousands of shows you’ve done. We love you so much, we’re going to miss you so much.”

We’re so happy that Elton has had a ball of a time during his tour and that he visited New Zealand, even though one of his Auckland shows had to be cancelled last minute due to extreme weather.
