Irene Cara has passed away at age 63 last Friday at her Florida home, as stated by her publicist.

Her publicist confirmed her death on Irene's Twitter.

"It is with profound sadness that on behalf of her family I announce the passing of Irene Cara," publicist Judith A. Moose wrote.

"Irene's family has requested privacy as they process their grief.  She was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films".

Irene sang the title track "Flashdance... What a Feeling" from the movie Flashdance for which she won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1984.

She was also known for playing the role of Coco in the '80s movie Fame, where she sang the iconic title track "Fame".

Initially, she was cast as a dancer for the film, however, later the role Coco was created for her and she sang the title track.

She was nominated for two Grammy awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Artist for "Fame".
