Wellington has been named the world's top 10 eco-friendly cities in the new sustainable travel handbook from Lonely Planet.
"With the lowest emissions per capita of any Australasian city, Wellington is at the forefront of the movement" Lonely Planet writes about Wellington.
Packed with world-class cultural institutions, eco-conscious cafes (many of which operate ‘mug libraries’), the compact capital is best explored on foot.
They highly recommend exploring Zealandia, "the world’s first fully fenced urban sanctuary designed to restore a Wellington valley’s forest floor and freshwater ecosystems to their pre-human state."
Other cities that made it into the top ten were:
- Vancouver, Canada
- Copenhagen, Denmark
- Singapore, Singapore
- Cape Town, South Africa
- Edinburgh, UK
- Bogotá, Colombia
- San Francisco, USA
- Oslo, Norway
- Tel Aviv, Israel
