If you start and end your day with music, you're actually starting and ending your day with a workout. A workout for your brain! Apparently, when you're listening to music, it exercises the brain.

"If you want to keep your brain engaged throughout the aging process, listening to or playing music is a great tool. It provides a total brain workout” says one Johns Hopkins otolaryngologist.

Research shows the amazing benefits that listening to music brings. It can reduce anxiety, blood pressure and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness and memory.

These are different methods that have been recommended to bring more music and brain benefits into your life

  • Jump-start your creativity: Rather than just listening to songs from the favourite era, experts suggest listening to what your kids or grandkids listen to. New music challenges the brain in a way that old familiar music does not. The initial unfamiliarity of the music forces the brain to understand the new sound.
  • Recall a memory from long ago: Listen to music that creates a nostalgic experience. For example, listening to the song you got married to, takes you back to the day you got married.
  • Listen to your body: Pay attention to how you react to different genre or forms of music and pick the ones that work well for you. A song that helps concentrate one person might be distracting to another, and what helps one person unwind might make another person jumpy.
