In more controversial news, the long-tailed bat has had a last minute inclusion into NZ's Bird of the Year competition.
Advocates for the small furry flying mammal are rejoicing at the addition, but for many others, the news is sure to ruffle a few feathers.
Forest & Bird made the announcement that pekapeka-tou-roa, the long-tailed bat, will be joining 75 native birds in this years competition.
Last year the kākāpō took out the #1 spot.
This year will be the first time a land mammal has ever been allowed in the running.
