Ed Sheeran chokes up as he sings new song 'Visiting Hours' at friend's State Funeral

It's never easy saying goodbye to a good friend.

Ed Sheeran has written a brand new song in honour of his late friend and music industry legend Michael Gudinski.

Ed performed the song in Australia at Mr Gudinski's state funeral and revealed he wrote the song while he was in quarrantine with his wife and newborn baby girl.

The emotional song is titled 'Visiting Hours' and the powerful lyrics will be relateble to anyone who has lost a loved one.

Grab the tissues... You can read the lyrics below.

I wish that heaven
Had visiting hours
So I could just show up
Then bring the news

That she’s getting older
And I wish that you met her
The things that she’ll learn from me
I got them all from you

And we just talk a while
And we’ll put all the world to wax
The little ones will grow and
I’ll still drink you’re favourite wine

But soon they’re going to close
But I’ll see you another day
So much has changed
Since you’ve been away

I wish that heaven
Had visiting hours
So I could just swing by
And ask your advice

What would you do in my situation
I haven’t a clue how I’d even raise them
What would you do
Cos you always do what’s right

And we just talk a while
Until my worries disappear
I tell you that I’m scared of turning out a failure
You’d say remember that the answers in the love that we create

So much has changed
Since you’ve been away

(Instrumental)

I wish that heaven
Had visiting hours
And I would ask them
If I could take you home

But I know what they’d say
That it’s for the best
So I will live life the way you taught me
And make it on my own

And I will close the door then I will open up my heart
And everyone I love will know exactly who you are
Cos this is not goodbye
It’s just until we meet again
So much has changed
Since you’ve been away
