Sir Elton John is the latest celebrity to donate money to the Australian bushfire recovery efforts.

The singer was performing at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney on Tuesday night when he announced that he was pledging $1 million to the fund.

Having visited Australia since 1971, Sir Elton said he "loved" the country and to see what was happening with the destructive bushfires broke his heart.

"There are people out there who have lost their lives trying to save homes. There are people who have lost their lives and their homes," he told the crowd.

"Lastly, there's the plight of the animals. A loss of their habitat that frankly is on a biblical scale, and heart-breaking."

Sir Elton, who is touring Australia as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, received cheers when he pledged the money, with many concert-goers getting to their feet in applause.

The recent Golden Globe winner called on Australians to "come together" and "fight".

"I love Australia so much. To those who have lost their homes, God bless, I hope that your life will be repaired very, very soon. I want to say thank you Australia again, and God bless."
