The Pogues' Shane MacGowan performs The Fairytale of New York live, defends lyrics

Christmas 17/12/2019

It's the Christmas song that seems to divide many - there's those who love, love, love Fairytale of New York and those that absolutely loathe it.

The controversial song has stirred up a lot of drama over the years, especially as we approach 2020. Some lyrics in the song are degrading, and many don't appreciate the language used.

Speaking to Ireland’s The Late Late Show, Shane MacGowan of The Pogues defended the song’s lyrics, before performing it with the full lyrics included.

“There is no political correctness to it,” MacGowan told the host.

MacGowan previously defended the song in a longer statement, explaining that the lyrics suited the female character in the song.

“The word was used by the character because it fitted with the way she would speak and with her character,” he said.

“She is not supposed to be a nice person or even a wholesome person. She is a woman of a certain generation at a certain time in history and she is down on her luck and desperate.”
