Disney release trailer for new live-action, Kiwi-directed film, Mulan

Must See 08/07/2019

The first trailer for Disney's live-action Mulan film has been released and it's been labelled stunning.

Directed by Kiwi filmmaker Niki Caro and produced in New Zealand and China, the modern retelling of the classic Chinese legend will be in cinemas in early 2020.

The adaptation is not a remake of the hit 1998 animated film, which has been an issue for some fans as the songs and dragon character Mushu added by Disney to the animated film are missing from the new film.

Now that the live-action trailer is out, it's being called "stunning", with some fans schooling others on why it doesn't need the elements Disney added to the '90s film.

Mulan is one of several live-action reboots Disney has recently made, along with Aladdin and The Lion King.

"When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father," reads the official synopsis.

"Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation... and a proud father."

Mulan will be released in 2020.
