Why Prince Harry and Meghan unfollowed everyone on instagram

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have unfollowed every member of the Royal Family on Instagram.

Meghan and Harry now only follow 16 people on the social media platform.

But while tabloids were ready to pounce on what appears to be a very dramatic turn of events, the couple has now written a lengthy post to their Instagram to explain the decision.

The pair have chosen to highlight mental health, as May is Mental Health Awareness Month in the US, and the UK Mental Health Awareness week also falls in May.

"We are hoping to shine a light on several Instagram accounts that promote mental well-being, mental fitness, body positivity, self-care and the importance of human connection," wrote the couple.

Among the accounts the pair follow is Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation, Oprah Winfrey's SuperSoul Sunday talk show, and Heads Together - the Royal family's mental health initiative.

"There are countless organisations doing amazing work for mental health - please consider the accounts we've highlighted as a small snapshot of this global support network,"

The Duke and Duchess went on to explain they will repeat this process of following and unfollowing various accounts monthly.

"Each month we will honour this same concept and change the accounts we solely follow based on a different theme or cause. Please go to our homepage and click "following" to see each of the select accounts and find out more about their work."

The Royal couple's Instagram has only been up and running for a month, having gained 1 million followers in just under six hours - a record for the social media platform.
