Prince William set to visit Christchurch next month

Prince William will visit Christchurch next month, Kensington Palace has revealed.

A statement says the Duke of Cambridge's visit will be on behalf of the Queen to "honour the victims of the Christchurch mosques terror attack".

The visit will be late next month, and comes at the request of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

The Duke will meet with those worst-affected by the Christchurch terror attack, and will "pay tribute to the extraordinary compassion and solidarity" that New Zealanders have shown since it occurred.

A full programme for Prince William's late-April visit will be announced soon, Kensington Palace says.

Ardern says the Duke is already familiar with Christchurch having visited multiple times following the city's destructive earthquakes.

"I'm really pleased that he can make a short visit to support those affected by the attack and pay tribute to the extraordinary compassion and solidarity that New Zealanders have displayed in recent weeks," she wrote.

"The visit will be another sign that this nation will always stand with those affected by the terror attacks, and the people of Christchurch."

"I'm sure all New Zealanders but especially the Muslim community of Christchurch will appreciate seeing the compassion and support, that has been so tangibly demonstrated since the attack, continue into the future."

Fifty people died and dozens more were injured in the Christchurch terror attack on March 15.

A National Remembrance Service will be held for the victims on Friday.
