Letter from King George VI found on Auckland motorway

14/02/2019

A box of memorabilia has been found on an Auckland motorway - and inside it, the astonishing discovery of a wartime letter of condolence from King George VI.

The letter was in a box filled with photographs, records and other family memorabilia.

It was found by maintenance crew on the northwest-bound lanes of State Highway 16 just before Rosebank Rd, on February 3.

"The box was found in a live lane, so must have dropped from a passing vehicle that had either come from the city centre or through the Waterview Tunnel," said Auckland Operations manager Rua Pani.

"Fortunately, [the box] didn't spring open and have the contents blown away by the wind."

The box is brown, with a gold inlay. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is trying to track down its owners, but has not yet had any luck.

"So far, our efforts to track down the owner of the box have been unsuccessful, but we do want this story to end happily," Ms Pani said.

Anyone who knows who the box may belong to is encouraged to contact the NZTA by emailing help@ama.nzta.govt.nz.
