Mike McRoberts opens up about his dancing debut

Must See 30/11/2018

Newshub presenter Mike McRoberts says watching his co-host Samantha Hayes compete in Dancing With The Stars NZ has left him feeling "a bit daunted" about his ballroom debut next year.

In an interview with The Edge Breakfast show on Friday morning, McRoberts said he had been asked to do the show before, but decided now "felt like the right time" to take up the challenge.

"I think it's exciting," he told Edge hosts Dom Harvey, Megan Annear and Clinton Randell.

"I was lying in the fetal position for a while, wondering if I'd done the right thing, but, there you go."

The 52-year-old, who described his go-to dance move as "kind of a hybrid," said he gave the decision a lot of thought before taking the plunge.

"I saw how much Sam got out of it last year, and, jeez, I also saw how much work she put into it too, and that's a little bit daunting," he said.

Hayes was crowned the 2018 winner of DWTS NZ in July, having received the most public votes in the finale while raising money for her chosen charity, NZ Riding For The Disabled.

Another contestant from this year's competition, former Bachelor star Zac Franich, recorded a message for McRoberts while appearing on The Edge Breakfast show earlier that morning.

"Best of luck, it's such a ride," Franich said.

"Don't stand on your partner's feet, and don't forget your moves, because you'll look like an idiot and no one wants that."

Matilda Rice, who found love with Art Green on the first season of The Bachelor NZ, will also be taking to the dance floor next year, it was announced on Thursday.

The rest of the famous competitors have yet to be announced, but Sharyn Casey and Dai Henwood will return as the show's hosts.
