Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has given some advice to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle following their pregnancy announcement.

A statement from Kensington Palace released yesterday announced Meghan's pregnancy, thanking the public for support since their wedding in May.

Ardern said she was yet to send a message of congratulations to the couple.

"I was just discussing whether that would be appropriate to do that while they were on the road or wait till they're in New Zealand."

The Prime Minister said she hopes Meghan doesn't get morning sickness, especially because she's travelling a lot.

"I hope she doesn't get morning sickness, because otherwise it feels like you've got constant motion sickness, which isn't pleasant."

Ardern also joked with one reporter about the term "geriatric pregnancy," which is the medical term for the pregnancy of a woman older than 35 years.

"I know those aren't your own words, that is actually the medical term that is used. I think there's good reason for that to be revised as a turn of phrase."
