Why did Meghan get praised for shutting her own car door?

Meghan Markle has been praised on social media for choosing to close her own car door while on her first official royal engagement by herself.

She was headed to the opening of a new Oceania exhibit at London's Royal Academy of Arts on Tuesday evening when the incident took place.

While she was there the Duchess of Sussex participated in a hongi with members of the New Zealand contingent.

The Sun's royal correspondent Emily Andrews tweeted a video of the Duchess arriving, showing her getting out of the car and greeting a museum official before closing the door.

"A princess who still takes the time to shut her car door. Well done Meghan," Ms Andrews wrote.

It's not technically a break in protocol for Meghan to shut her own door, but royals are rarely seen doing it.

Etiquette and protocol coach William Hanson said in a tweet it was often done due to security concerns.

"This is not a protocol breach," he said.

"Usually royalty and dignitaries have someone to open/close car doors for security reasons: nothing to do with 'princess behaviour'. Meghan clearly just shut the door out of force of habit."

Social media users responding to Ms Andrews were all for it and many of them praised the Duchess for what seems like a simple act.

"I don't think [Meghan] sees herself as better than anyone else. She knows that she and [Prince Harry] are blessed to have found each other," one person wrote.

"I really don't think it occurs to her that someone else is there to do that. It is something she's always done herself like the rest of us," another said.
