Kerry McKinnon from Strathdownie in Western Victoria has recently witnessed a shocking pairing in her back garden.
The temperatures in their area can plummet toward 5 degrees overnight, despite being very hot during the day, and not every animal has a fabulous fur coat to survive.
None like her beautiful retriever dog, Asha. Her husband found the surprise on the porch early in the morning. Kerry recalls him yelling out to her to come and see what happened.
Kerry admitted the moment caught her completely off-guard, she wasn't expecting this from her dog at all! Asha had a tiny baby Koala on her back snuggling up in her bed.
She kept looking back at the koala, but she wasn’t trying to get him off her or anything. She was happy to let him snuggle into her.
We will never know for sure how this unlikely pairing occurred, but Kerry believes that
“The baby koala fell out of his mum’s pouch and didn’t know what to do. He would have just wandered over to our back porch and seen the dogs in their beds, then decided to snuggle in Asha’s fur because it’s nice and warm.”
It is a fantastic story due to the heroic nature of this beautiful dog, and if the baby koala didn't sleep there, the chances are he wouldn't have survived the night.
They have since talent the kola to the vet, and he is perfectly healthy and is being set back into the wild.
Such a heartwarming story of friendship!
