The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's upcoming visit could be worth millions of dollars to New Zealand, an economist says.

Kensington Palace announced on Monday the pair will visit New Zealand along with Australia, Fiji and the Kingdom of Tonga later this year.

Tourism New Zealand director of PR Rene De Monchy says the visit could bring millions of dollars to the economy.

"A lot of people will look to follow in their footsteps and not only visit New Zealand but probably try and do some of the specific activities they might be doing on that trip."

Prince William's 2014 brought a similar windfall or the economy. .

Mr De Monchy expects the same if not more money could be made from the newlyweds trip.

"Previous royal visits, the bulk of the media attention would be European, the UK and Germany loves following the royals as well.

"I think what you'll get with Meghan's visit, you'll get a broader reach of exposure in the United States as well."

When Kate and Meghan wear specific outfits they "quickly" sell out so they same thing could also happen on this visit, he says.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex tour will coincide with the fourth Invictus Games, created by Prince Harry, to be held in Sydney in October.

Prince Harry's mother Diana also opted to visit New Zealand and Australia for her first royal tour after she married Prince Charles.
