Jacinda Ardern couldn't attend any of Ed Sheeran's concerts, but afternoon tea with the singer was the next best thing.

The Prime Minister posted a photo of herself and the English musician to her official Facebook page on Sunday evening.

"Couldn't make any of Ed Sheeran's shows while he is here so cheekily suggested he come round for a cuppa and some scones," she wrote.

Couldn’t make any of Ed Sheeran’s shows while he is here so cheekily suggested he come round for a cuppa and some...

"Didn't quite expect him to say yes."

Sheeran was treated to the best of Ms Ardern's hospitality at her Auckland home, with her preparing scones just for the occasion which "weren't a complete disaster".

Partner Clarke Gayford also enjoyed the visit. The dad-to-be and the singer shared a moment together going through a book on pregnancy by Kiwi actress Jacquie Brown.

He will perform the second of three shows at Mt Smart Stadium on Sunday night, before kicking off the Dunedin leg of the tour on Thursday.

It's Ms Ardern's second high-profile meeting in a week, after she met former President Barack Obama during his three-day visit of the country.
