Kelly Clarkson and John Legend team up to reinvent 'Baby It's Cold Outside'

Kelly Clarkson and John Legend have teamed up to remake a Christmas classic so that it is more suitable for the '#MeToo' era.

The song is to be released on John Legend's Christmas album, due out next month and will see some signature lyrics from the 1944 classic being swapped out.

Lyric changes include "I've got to go away, but baby it's cold outside" in Frank Loesser's version of the song replaced with "I've got to go away, I can call you a ride" in Legend's.

They also removed the "say what's in this drink line" and added: "I'll call a car and tell 'em to hurry'"

While many have embraced John Legend's updated and 'woke' 2019 lyrics, some have called the version 'pathetic'.

See the lyric changes below.

Original lyrics from 1944:

I really can't stay (but baby, it's cold outside)
I've got to go away (but baby, it's cold outside)
This evening has been (been hoping that you'd drop in)
So very nice (I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice)
My mother will start to worry (beautiful what's your hurry?)
My father will be pacing the floor(listen to the fireplace roar)
So really I'd better scurry (beautiful please don't hurry)
But maybe just a half a drink more (put some records on while I pour)
The neighbors might think (baby, it's bad out there)
Say what's in this drink? (no cabs to be had out there)

John Legend's 2019 version:

I really can’t stay (baby it's cold outside)
I've got to go away (I can call you a ride)
This evening has been (so glad that you dropped in)
So very nice (time spent with you is paradise)
My mother will start to worry (I'll call a car and tell 'em to hurry)
What will be friends think (I think they should rejoice)
If I have one more drink? (It's your body and your choice)
