The highly-anticipated Sir Elton John biopic 'Rocketman' has finally hit cinemas here in New Zealand, and the reviews have been out of this world.
The actor portraying Sir Elton, Taron Egerton, has done an outstanding job of portraying the iconic rock n' roller, and has kept the Elton John magic alive when performing his songs on the big screen.
But with Taron having to play the role of a world-renowned performer, there were a few nerves he possessed when filming the film. A big one was singing Elton's songs.
When learning the songs for the film, Sir Elton stressed to Taron to put his own spin on the songs. “Don’t think you have to sing it exactly the way that I sang it. Don’t think you have to perform it the way I performed it," Elton reportedly told Egerton.
Adding, “I think it’s the challenge for the actor to embody the spirit and not get into thinking they have to do an impersonation.”
Taron Egerton revealed that he was very hesitant and somewhat nervous to perform a few particular songs in the film.
"The rock songs," he said during an interview with BBC Radio 1. "I think because I'm not a rock singer... I've done bits of ballad singing and kind of pop stuff. I can sing, but real kind of gravely rock singing... that was a whole other challenge."
He added, "It was something that Elton was very very keen that I pushed."
