A 14 month-old baby in Milan, Italy was reported to have been fed a vegan diet and has now been removed from it's parent's care due to malnutrition.
The baby was taken to hospital by his grandparents and doctors were shocked to find his weight was only just higher than a newborn.
Blood tests revealed the child's calcium levels were barely adequate to survive and he was also suffering a congenital heart condition which required emergency surgery.
Paediatrics director Luca Bernardo said, "This forces us to reflect on uncommon feeding gegimes, even if in this case it was complicated by a cardiac malformation. It is not a problem to choose different or unusual kinds of nutrition and we certainly do not want to enter into a discussion of the merits of the decision. But since birth, the baby should have had support in this case with calcium and iron.”
The hospital have reported the case to the police and an inquiry has opened to suggest removal of the child from his parents.
The baby's future is now in the hands of the children's court.
This is also not the first case either, four children have been hospitalised within the last 18 months.
