There is nothing quite like a big bunch of roses!
The only thing about the gorgerous flower is that when they are cut, they tend to have a rather short lifespan. That may be the main reason why the internet is obsessed with a succulent most have only just discovered.
The succulent is the Greenovia dodrantalis, also known as a mountain rose, and since social media has discovered it, the succulent has been popping up all over the internet and even selling out in stores that sell its seeds.
The blue-green version of the plant has been around for a while, but recently fans of the plant started going bananas after an extremely rare pink version of the succulent was discovered.
Mountain roses have tightly packed leaves arranged in layers much like a rose’s petals. But while a rose’s blooms will fade after a few days, these succulents will keep on looking great as long as you give them what they need. This plant originated in the Canary Islands, so it prefers warm, sunny weather and doesn’t require much water.
It works well as an indoor plant, but you can grow it outdoors as well.
If you live in a region that experiences freezing temperatures during the winter, remember to bring it indoors until the weather warms up again in spring.
A full-grown mountain rose reaches about six inches in height. Over time, it may produce pups or offsets, which are smaller versions of itself that are attached to the main plant by thin stems. You can easily propagate your succulent by snipping these smaller plants off and growing them in another container. Sometimes mountain roses will even produce small yellow flowers in spring that may result in seeds.
Because mountain roses are hard to find for sale, and the pink variety is even more rare, growing these succulents from seeds may be your best bet. Just a heads up: it can take up to two years before your plant would develop a rose-like appearance.
