Jacinda Ardern reveals NZ's Royal Wedding gift

Must See 15/05/2018

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has revealed the chosen wedding gift from New Zealand to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their wedding day.

Our little country will gift $5000 on the couple's behalf to Pillars, a NZ charity supporting children of prisoners.

The Royal couple announced they wanted well-wishers to make charitable donations rather than send them any wedding presents.

Ms Ardern made the announcement at the post-Cabinet news conference on Monday afternoon.

"The couple were happy that their wedding will be acknowledged in New Zealand by a donation to Pillars, which provides fantastic support to a group of very vulnerable children," Jacinda Ardern said.

"The wedding this weekend also coincides with the 30th anniversary of Pillars."

Pillars chief executive Vera McFelin told Newshub the staff at the charity were "absolutely thrilled" at the news.

"How wonderful that this generous gift comes to Pillars on the 30th anniversary of our organisation's existence" she added in a statement.

"We will use this opportunity to mark the wedding present as a special fund."

More than 23,000 children are affected by having a parent in prison, and Ms McFelin says they are "often affected socially and economically by the changes in their lives.

"These children are often invisible and yet are so vulnerable in our communities. We really appreciate this gift which will help some of these children achieve at a greater level."

The charity assists the children of parents who are in prison with a variety of programmes, including mentoring, programmes within prison and general assistance to families and whanau.

Ms Ardern says Prince Harry and Ms Markle are “very interested in initiatives that support vulnerable children and young people”.

"This gift reflects the couple’s wish that as many people as possible benefit from the generosity of spirit that has been expressed in response to their engagement and wedding.  I wish them all the best for their very special day on Saturday," Ms Ardern said.
