Angelina Jolie has finally opened up about filing for divorce from Brad Pitt for the first time, saying they will "always be a family".

The Tomb Raider star broke her silence on the topic in an interview with BBC World News while in Cambodia.

"I don't want to say very much about that, except to say it was a very difficult time and and we are a family and we will always be a family," says Jolie.

"We will get through this time and hopefully be a stronger family for it."

Pitt was investigated for child abuse over an alleged incident on a plane with Jolie and their children. Although he was cleared of any criminal behaviour, the episode is said to have sparked Jolie's filing for divorce, which the BBC reporter brought up with her.

"Many, many people find themselves in this situation. My whole, my family… we've all been through a difficult time. My focus is my children, our children and my focus is finding this way through," says Jolie.

"We are and forever will be a family. I am coping with finding a way through to make sure that this somehow makes us stronger and closer."

The 41-year-old was in Cambodia to promote the latest film she has directed, First They Killed My Father, a true-life account of the Khmer Rouge genocide through the eyes of a child.
