Woman who featured in famous V-J Day kiss photograph has died
The woman famous for locking lips with a World War II sailor George Mendonsa on August 14th 1945, has sadly passed away, leaving her memory in the form of a photograph.
Greta Friedman was aged 92 and was living in a retirement village in Virginia.
It took decades before the pair were identified in the photograph which was featured in LIFE magazine, taken by photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt.
Mendonsa is 93-years-old and lives in Rhodes Island.
Greta was kissed by George entirely out of the blue and son Josh commented, 'My mom always had an appreciation for a feminist viewpoint, and understood the premise that you don't have a right to be intimate with a stranger on the street, but she didn't assign any bad motives to George in that circumstance, that situation, that time.'
The pair met again in 1980 and from that point on the pair exchanged christmas cards every year.
Many people were falsely claimed to have been represented in the image in the past.
We send out love to the Friedman family.
